Key findings

  1. 01

Of the 2,809 ideas Lumi tagged in 108 JEE Main shifts, 1,377 (49%) were asked only once.

  2. 02

1307 ideas came back in a later year, and 718 in three or more of the 8 years. The most asked, High and Low Spin States, came 34 times in 30 shifts.

  3. 03

In 2026, 82% of questions tested an idea an earlier year had asked, up from 5% in 2020.

  4. 04

45% of returns came in the same year, 97% of those in another shift. Across years, the most common gap is 1 year.

  5. 05

Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids holds the most repeating ideas (35 of 59). By subject: Physics 49%, Chemistry 55%, Maths 49% of ideas asked again.

Years between two asks of the same idea, 4,911 returns. Same: another shift that year, or 63 times twice in one shift. 2018 and 2019 have no analysed shifts, so a return from 2017 to 2020 counts as 3 years.

Share of each year’s analysed questions testing an idea an earlier year had asked. It rises partly because each year has more years behind it, and since 2024 more shifts a year are analysed.

Ideas asked in 4 years or more

387 ideas came back in 4 or more of the 8 years, 188 of them in 5 or more. They are the closest thing JEE Main has to a fixed question. Open any row for the newest questions that tested it; the idea’s page has all of them.

Years counts the different years that asked the idea. Squares are the 8 years with analysed shifts, 2017 to 2026; a number means the idea came more than once that year, usually in different shifts. The shade is scaled to one shift, since Lumi analysed 1 to 24 shifts a year.

Where repeats live

Chapters that keep asking the same ideas

79 chapters have at least one idea asked twice or more. Size alone does not explain it: among chapters with 40 or more ideas tested, the share asked again runs from 39% (Conic Sections) to 64% (Differential Equations).

Form

The shape repeated ideas take

Match the list ideas come back most often: 36 of 57 (63%) were asked again. A line that climbs means the format is over-represented among the ideas JEE Main reuses.

Interval is the average number of calendar years between the years that asked the idea. Pattern is how the idea has behaved across the analysed shifts: asked most years, in cycles, new since 2024 or gone quiet. How we tag and count.

Method

How to read this

What is an idea?
The single fact, law or method a question tests, one level below the topic. For example, the topic Crystal Field Theory holds the idea High and Low Spin States.
Does a repeated idea mean a repeated question?
No. A repeat here means the same idea, not the same question: it can come back as a numerical-answer question in one shift and a single-correct one in the next. Learn the idea, not the old question.
Why do so many repeats fall in the same year?
JEE Main runs many shifts a year, each with its own paper, and Lumi analysed up to 24 shifts in a single year, so an idea asked in one shift can come back in another shift of that same year: 45% of returns are same-year.
Does this cover every shift?
No. It covers 108 of the 174 JEE Main shifts held from 2017 to 2026 (9,285 Paper 1 questions), not every shift. An idea counted once here may have come in a shift Lumi has not analysed, so the repeat counts are a floor.
